Super 8 - An homage to Spielberg's run of classic kid-centric 80's films, even harkens to the funnier or more whimsical side of his horror films. Spielberg apparently had more than just a funding role in the production, but wow. The apprentice is every bit as good as the master.
+1 to this, but Its amazing how polarized people are on this movie, with the lovers of it all over 30 and the haters mostly under 20 :) Nostalgia, for sure.

I think 2011 has been a particularly crap year for films, as I havent bought many that I liked this year on bluray (my judgement process)

My picks anyway:
1. Super 8
2. Paranormal Activity 3
3. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
4. Real Steel
5. Limitless

Plus a whole bunch of others I had hoped would be good but were in fact shit - Tne Thing, Thor.

Going to do my 2011 list next week. In the meantime I've looked back at the last 5 years and had a shot at predicting my fave movies of 2012 ...

Andrew, you forgot Prometheus on your list of hits for 2012. Its quite likely this film could be a record-breaker for the genre.

Hey I had to figure at least one of the movies I'm looking forward to will dissappoint. For me, Prometheus has some big odds to fight to be one of my favourites of the year. I'm not massively into the Alien franchise (though I really like the first one, and the second to a lesser extent). I haven't been following the info about the new one closely though. Hopefully I'm wrong :)

Drive was ok, but the songs in the soundtrack ruined it for me. Why put such a cheesy cheesball in there? They were all terrible, but this one was godawful:

And you, have proved, to be
A real human being, and a real hero
Real human being, and a real hero
Real human being, and a real hero
Real a human being ( being being being... )

It's a pity to ruin a good movie with such a poor song choice, it felt 100% forced. I'm pretty sure that wasn't in the writer's head when he was scripting.

Watch To Live and Die in LA and then Drive and its soundtrack and the feel of it makes a bit more sense.

If To Live and Die in LA has any similar songs in the soundtrack, I'll have to give it a miss.

Watched this yesterday, pretty good Tribulation 99

Also this doc, quite cool as well Supermen of Malegaon

And last weekend I watched one of the best sobaditsgood movies I've seen, had me laughing and/or smiling throughout the whole damn thing: Mystics In Bali. Craptacular dubbing? Check. Retarded dialogue? Of course. A flying head eating babies straight from the punany? Why not!

The ATM poll results are up ... http://www.abc.net.a...es/viewerspoll/

Black Swan #1.
Your thoughts?

I'm reasonably happy with it. 4 of my picks are in the top 10, and the lowest rated out of my picks is Tintin at #50 something.

I liked Phillip Morris and I want to see Tucker & Dale. With Super 8, for everything up to and including the train crash I was thinking "holy crap, this is awesome!" and then it got steadily worse. By the end I was feeling kinda "meh" about it. But when I went to do my top 10 I realised that was enough to make it better than most films from this year (imho). Also, that film-within-the-film during the credits was great fun. It went some ways to saving the ending for me.

I thought Black Swan was completely overrated and pretentious garbage - It was always going to win awards.

Black Swan was one of those movies were I experienced the interesting phenomena where the people you see a film with totally change your perception of the film.

Or in other words, there were people laughing at it, so I couldn't take it seriously.

It's weird and kind of annoying when people crack up in a cinema at something that's supposed to be serious, but then I always check myself and go, "Hold on. If they find it funny, who are you to say they shouldn't laugh. People react differently to things." Maybe if someone finds it funny when it's meant to be serious, it's the filmmakers fault anyway.

This has happened so far with; The Machinist, Let the Right One In and Black Swan. All of those I walked out thinking "not so great" partly because I found them a bit ridiculous because other people were laughing at it. With LTROI I was convinced that most people would've had a laugh at the "cat attack" scene, but the conversations went like this:

Guy: Oh, dude, you have to see Let the right one in.
Me: Yeah I've seen it actually
Guy: Cool. It's awesome huh?
Me: Well, I thought it was pretty good. Maybe a bit overrated.
Guy: Oh, I really liked it.
Me: Didn't you find that bit with the cats .. a bit funny?
Guy: What? I don't remember ...
Me: Y'know. Where all the cats attack, and I think she falls down the stairs or something?
Guy: Oh yeah. Nah, I thought that was pretty intense.
Me: Oh ... okay
