I am looking for a recording studio to record my band's 2nd EP. I think we got ripped off recording at a home studio the first time so we want to get into a real recording studio with a good engineer or producer this time.

Anyone know of anywhere good?

You need to see Brain at Fremantle Recording Studios. Good equip. Good vibe. Good sound and good price.

These posts seem incredibly suss to me -both users signed up just to make these posts. I'm going to take a stab and say that at least one of these users is Brian Mitra or someone else from Fremantle Recording Studios...

Personally I'd suggest looking at all the studios/producers in Perth, finding out some of their clients/artists and see which production you like the best.

Saying that, I am a producer and sound engineer myself looking for good bands to record- check out this post in this forum for more info and contact details for me and Crank Recording Studio.

Good luck!!

One factor that I think is overlooked by many people is the sound engineer themselves.
When I go to record, I not only try to find a good studio, but also an engineer who has the right skills and personality for the job, as well a keen interest in the style of music Ill be recording.
These few things make a huge difference to the final product!

What genre of music? There's obviously no point getting someone who is shit hot at producing jazz if you're a grindcore band.

Poonshead studios in East Freo. The guy is thorough as and does everything till its perfect. Literally will work on your stuff 24 hours straight and not charge for over time. If your comitted he will be too. Well worth the money. Has recorded some big artists like Lenny Kravitz, Tame Impala.

Got a weekend booked early March to finish our ep. Cant wait.

Yeah, he's good. Very good, in fact. But only really for metal. And VERY expensive.

Check out Bergerk in Rivervale. Alan has done many bands from many different genres and will be doing our EP in a few weeks. He's been in the game for quite a while too. Not just one of these kids that thinks just coz he did a course at TAFE and has ProTools on his Macbook that he is a professional sound engineer.

My advice would be: do a LOT of research and listen to samples before you decide.

I don't know if the original poster is still looking, hopefully not, but if you like, check out my work at www.MidasTouchStudios.com.au and decide if it's your thing or not. I've been doing a lot more vintage style sounding recordings lately too, more 70's inspired stuff as opposed to the modern stuff that's currently on my website.

I have my own overdub/mix room and record out of a few different studios around Perth, so my pricing is flexible and it gives me a lot of options to tailor the recording method to your artistic style.

In regards to the other posters, yeah I can vouch for Laurie McCallum at Sumo as well. Sumo is a fantastic studio, in fact it's one of my favourites to use myself. Laurie's really got his own sound going too. I recorded Particle Exhilarator there (And a bunch of other stuff) and check out how different that sounds from his mixes!

Alan at Bergerk is a great guy too and has a bunch of interesting gear. Again, completely different style.

If you've got an ok budget, go with PoonsHead and Rob Grant, stuff ends up perfect, but takes a loooong time. On the other hand, Ampersonic with, (dare I say his name on a perthbands forum?) Corey marriott, is actually a pretty good idea as well, he isn't too bad

Just finished a few songs at Poons - took foorrrreevverrrrr though. Very precise, but we were a bit disappointed with the communication of where things were at. For example, got told be at the studio at 4pm to do guitar overdubs. Didn't pick up a guitar till 2am.

If your on a tight budget watch out.
