no actually. i wasnt.

Name another venue in Australia that:

* operates 7 night's for original music,
* has no hire fee for local bands,
* has a full awesome warm sounding pa with operator,
* always give a generous rider to bands
* are owned by people that actually buy & like new music,
* has had live music for 50 years,
* has an actual vibe consistent amongst the owners, bar staff and sound guys,
* has a smoking area,
* give bar tabs to peole who want to run functions (rather than charging them),
* take pride in having awesome coffee,
* cater for acts as diverse as Hermitude to Suprise Sex Attack to Oka
* has no unnecessary heavy handed security
* & treats each musician, punter & supplier as the individuals that they are.

Go on tell me?

: )

Well I didnt want to start comparing apples and oranges, but as someone who has played just about every venue around this town over the years, I can tell you that lists like these are largely irrelevant - A long list of good points can be made about any venue.
  • Burswood Casino has also supported bands for nearly 30 years, offers good pay and conditions, is much larger than Mojos with its own private backstage area and much nicer stage setup, including sound.
  • The Castle has virtually none of this, but drinks were cheap and bands had an easy loadin, a great vibe and bands got to take a DVD away with them, which many thought was a fantastic idea.
  • The Civic Backroom is spacious, easy to find with heaps of parking.
  • Amplifier Bar has/had a great vibe and one of the best live engineers in Perth. Its also central
  • The Rocket Room caters for a large cross-section of bands, and powers on well after most other have closed up for the night.
Those venues above also have a list of things we dont like about them, as Im sure Mojos does also.
The point is, all of these places have something to offer, and we will tend to frequent the ones that we identify with for whatever reason. To say that one is better than another as a 'bar' is subjective, and cant be determined just by the quality of the owners and the coffee.

Sorry Damo but I respectfully gotta disagree and wonder (respectfully) if you're trippin cuz, and comparing Mojos to those venues is the antithesis of 'Apples and Oranges'! More like 'Grappling hooks and Walruses'!

Burswood casino - How often do original bands get to play there? And when they do what's the hire fee? Do they even get to play there. Not 7 nights a week, and i'll bet you money that it doesn't cover one tenth the range Mojos does. How many original music punters would drop in there to check out bands I wonder. Zero, that's how many becuase it's not even an original music supporting venue.

The Castle- Even though I liked it and wish it was around. No rider, worse PA gear, improvements to the venue in terms of service desperately needed for this venue as well and truly discussed at great length on this very site when it was running. The DVD was cool but no way does that trump it over all Mojos has to offer

Civic Backroom - Shithole, worst attitude in a soundguy i've ever seen (though he might have moved on), security were cool but management were fucked. Charge $500 room hire. Actually in a strange reversal for venues like this one, the bouncers were the niceest people there. they seemed embarrassed.

Amplifier Bar - I was around (as you were i'm sure) the week it opened mate. Played a million gigs there but it is way hard to book now so just not applicable to most local bands. Best PA and mixer (if Ian's still there these days) but still a pretty stuffy attitude these days and shit FUCKWIT security that treat folks like cattle. Man could i elaborate. Good venue to play still, but not generally band friendly since they started getting a different crowd 5, 6 years back. Not as holisitcally relevant as Mojos. No-where near.

The Rocket Room gave up a couple years ago now Damo and only books a very small range of bands/genres for original music. I can't see anything particularly exciting going on there. I never played there but I heard many stories of shitty management there hey.

Not sure if you've done your homework on this one Damo ???

I've always liked Mojos, but I was putting up posters there yesterday and I was spun out at how awesome it looks these days.

It was packed too, on a Tuesday night while a bunch of pretty good sounding new original bands were playing. I thought 'holy shit where did all these people come from and who the fuck are these bands???'
That's the mark of a truly great original music venue right there.

Oh, so we're specifically only talking about bars who cater for original bands? Because the thread starter had blanketted Mojos as simply 'The best bar in Australia'. I was simply pointing out that I disagree and its a subjective argument at best.

Peace.

Move it closer to the traino and you've got a win.
And that is all I have to say about that.

Bangers are you talking about Mojo's or Burswood cos Mojos is about three minutes walk from North Freo train station...

Andrew - you forgot to mention proximity to burger... that has become an important part of my Mojos experience

The only sad thing about Mojos is less parking space (and a tow warning sign has been put up) in what used to be a carpark basically only ever used by Mojos funsters :( Was so used to that! Love the revitalisiation of the area though.

Anyone who has been to Mojos in a while should go down, i've always loved the joint even when the toilets used to be dodgy.. but it's firing on all cylinders at the moment

On chairs recommendation, I might go check it out again. It's been about a year since I've been down there anyway.

Speaking of towing, i remember back in the Syzygy days all our cars copped parking fines at the Hydey after being told by management to park outside the door. Fun times!

Oh man I loved the old load in spot at Hydey, right outside the TAB door. Never got busted, you were pretty unlucky Damo. I was looking at that spot last time I drove past the 'new' Hydey, and wondered how we ever got away with it. Have they extended the sidewalk there? There doesn't seem to be as much room.. plus it's only a few metres from the traffic lights.

I'm not one to shy away from a good debate with Andrew, but I certainly have no defence if he were to attack me with this one. There is something about anything music thats controlled by people with a genuine passion with it, that tends to flow all the way down. There is something about Mojo's where the bottom line is not as much about money as it is about having an awesome live bar that supports all music. The place was built with a beautiful community spirit which continues to thrive.
This is by no means biased but research has proven that the best 30th Birthday party ever was in actual fact, mine, which happened at Mojo's. I don't think I'm not the only one that has had quite a few most memorable times which includes both music and great people. I get tingles now just thinking of some of them.
Brian,Brian. The babe they called 'Brian', He grew,...grew, grew, and grew--,Grew up to be-- grew up to be A boy called 'Brian'-- A boy called 'Brian'. He had arms... and legs... and hands... and feet, This boy... whose name was 'Brian', And he grew,... grew, grew, and grew-- Grew up to be-- Yes, he
